Deep in the Heart of Texas (3/13/10)

By Ed - Last updated: Saturday, March 13, 2010

We’re making progress. Left El Paso about 8 AM this morning. On arriving at Van Horn (beep-beep) we found that we had entered the central time zone. We advanced our watches an hour, from 11:30 to 12:30. Since we had eaten a large breakfast at Flying J, we weren’t yet hungry, so we continued on [...]

Return to Las Cruces, and Safely Home Again

By Ed - Last updated: Thursday, March 11, 2010

We drove back to Las Cruces and got the mail. It was good that this showed up, since it had Roseann’s Social Security card, and we will need that to get her driver’s license. Along with the visit to the Post Office, we had lunch at La Posta, as recommended by Angel in a comment [...]

Down in the West Texas Town of El Paso…

By Ed - Last updated: Thursday, March 11, 2010

… I fell in love with — well, you get the idea. There’s a certain something to one’s first night spent in one’s new home state. We’ve stated that we are becoming Texas residents and on Monday we moved our trailer from Las Cruces to El Paso. We would have gotten our license plates, but [...]

Alamogordo

By Ed - Last updated: Monday, March 8, 2010

On Sunday (3/7) we visited Alamogordo, NM, home of the New Mexico Museum of Space History. It took a bit over an hour to drive from Las Cruces to Alamogordo, via Hwy 70. US-70 passes through the White Sands Missile Range and the White Sands National Monument. Like most of the Desert Southwest, the scenery [...]

Deming, NM to Las Cruces, NM (3/4/10)

By Ed - Last updated: Thursday, March 4, 2010

Moving briskly along the State of New Mexico brings us to Las Cruces. The ride along I-10 for the past day or so has been pretty dreary. Lots of open space, very little development between towns. Occasionally there is a store for tourists, usually preceded by 20 miles of billboards. New Mexico allows the sale [...]

By the time we get to Phoenix (2/25/2010)

By Ed - Last updated: Thursday, February 25, 2010

We took quite a nice ride to day from Quartzsite to Phoenix (and on to Mesa) by way of US Hwy 60. Rather than staying on I-10, we performed what my parents taught me was “shunpiking“. We took Hwy 60 since we had better expectations of breakfast.

Arizona, take off your rainbow shades (2/24/2010)

By Ed - Last updated: Wednesday, February 24, 2010

Well, we made Arizona today. After a home-cooked breakfast in the trailer, we left Rialto at about 8:30 AM. We traveled east through San Bernadino all the way to Indio, where we stopped for fuel, a grocery store run, and then lunch at Panda Express — Roseann’s favorite. Then back on the road bound for [...]

Leaving L.A. (2/23/10)

By Ed - Last updated: Tuesday, February 23, 2010

This is the first blog post from the road! Staging is complete. All the storage things are in the storage, and all the traveling things are in the trailer! The cable modem is returned, the post office is notified, and were ready to go by 1 pm. Of course, we realized that if we left, [...]

Birchas Ha Chamah — The Blessing of the Sun

By Ed - Last updated: Thursday, April 9, 2009

If you haven’t had your head under a religious rock these past few months, you’ve encountered the buzz about the Blessing of the Sun, which takes place every 28 years. A good explanation of this can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birkat_Hachama We went to Birchat HaChama on the beach in Boca Raton, FL.   The event was [...]
