We moved today

28 August 2007

One of the things I haven’t written about is that this trip has been a maintenance nightmare.  So far we’ve done brakes, a new trailer hitch, and two water pumps. When the trailer hitch broke, in Puyallup, we were pretty much stuck in our site until we could get it replaced. We had electric, but not water or dump. In the middle of last week, we got towed by another RVer to the dump station and the water spigot. We ran out of water again on Monday morning, while I was out getting the new trailer hitch installed.

Today, Tuesday, we hooked up the new trailer hitch for the first time, and adjusted the tension. Wow! I never knew how it was supposed to feel when towing. With new brakes on the trailer, and the new, freshly adjusted hitch, towing is a dream.

I thought we were out of the woods, maintenance wise, until we hooked up today, and discovered some stripped gears in the driver side landing leg. We were fortunate to get the leg up, so that we could travel. I called around and found an RV shop at our next destination that said they’d take a look. More on this later.

We traveled over “Sturdy Gertie” the 1950 vintage span of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. This is the bridge that replaced “Galloping Gertie,” which oscillated and self-destructed in the wind, about four months after it’s opening in 1940.

We then traveled up the Kitsap Peninsula, past Bremerton and over the Hood Canal Bridge.  This took us onto the main part of the Olympic Peninsula where we traveled to Chimicum, and landed at the Escapees CoOp  — The Evergreen Coho Park in Chimacum. Like all the Escapees parks, this is a lovely spot.

Tomorrow, we go back to Sonny’s RV to have our jack rebuilt. From there, we’ll either return here, or go to Port Townsend Elks, to spend the week and the Labor Day Weekend.
